Firstly, apologies for this going up late. I seem to be missing parts of my brain the last couple of days.

As you can see (well, if you’re a regular reader of the blog – we do have those right?) I finally got round to swapping the template over and I’ve gone through replacing the comic images with links to try and tidy this place and make the page a bit quicker to load. I haven’t done them all yet. The early part of the archive still needs doing but the first page is looking nice, which is the most important thing, right?

Also I’ve set up a Deviant Art account. You can find it at http://wendyw.deviantart.com/ and it contains quite a lot of Gilbert and Grim stuff, including a wallpaper you can download if you want to for whatever reason and also photos, collages and other drawings of mine. Also Jess has one at http://mkindustrial.deviantart.com/ where you can see some of her fantastic photographs and writing.

Today’s comic marks the end of the Viking/Vortex story line. That’s not to say they won’t be appearing a lot more, but from now on they’ll be appearing more as the islanders’ neighbours than a cause of chaos and confusion round the island.

The vortex isn’t going anywhere either. As William told the mayor, it will take seven years to disappear and although nothing’s going to be coming out of it soon, who knows what the future holds?

I’ve been thinking about what to do with this blog.
For those of you who only started coming here after I set up the Smack Jeeves account ( http://gilbertandgrim.smackjeeves.com for anyone who didn’t come here from that site) this used to be the main home of the comic. It wasn’t very practical so started looking around and found Smack Jeeves and that became the new home.

I didn’t want to close down the blog though so I’ve been randomly updating it since but from now on we have a new system and it makes some kind of sense I think.

From now on I (or sometimes Jess if I have nothing to say and she feels like writing something) will update this every Saturday and the comics will just be posted as links. I don’t want to remove them completely as the main purpose of keeping this is so the comic can still be viewed even when there’s problems with the main site, so remember if you want to check the comic out and you’re getting those pesky 503 errors that have been plaguing smack Jeeves recently (I haven’t had any trouble recently but just in case the problem’s not completely gone yet) then make sure you have this blog bookmarked as well and you will never go without. ^_^

I’m also going to go through the archive on here replaces images with links and just tidying up a few things. It might be time for a new look as well.

Anyway, this week’s comics can be found here and here and deal with the Vikings, even if they don’t make much of an appearance in them.

An interesting thing I found when I was doing a bit of research on Vikings was that all the Viking writings that we know of date from after their conversion to Christianity. These Vikings, I decided, are from before that and as such are completely impossible to talk to.

Unless of course, you happen to be Death Incarnate.
Then you can do whatever the hell you want it seems.

How do they know when the Vikings came from?

Good question.

Thank you. So how do they know?

Well, Patalena, the one in the black dress, has a vast knowledge of local history and archaeological digs have found traces of Viking occupancy of the island but only for a very short while.

So that’s where they come from then?

That’s right.

(Stops talking to herself but starts talking in third person instead.)

Other new things this week include a new domain name and new email addresses for me and Jess. She’s kittyjess@gilbertandgrim.com and if there are any problems with the site other than those pesky 503 errors (not our fault) she’ll want to know about it. Mine is wendy@gilbertandgrim.com because I couldn’t think of anything more interesting at the time. Email me about whatever you want. I really don’t care as long as it’s not technical issues.

I’m going to try and write these blog entries in advance from now on so I can turn them into something good, even if I’m finishing this one 11.45 at night, right before an update.

Island Politics

The characters in the comic live on an unnamed and uncharted island in the Atlantic, not too far from Britain.

This island contains one town, two villages, several swamps, an extinct volcano and a lot of woodland. The council in charge of writing the island's constitution were pretty realistic about the scale of the place and as a result the Mayor is affectively the most important political figure on the island.

Some people have suggested the title should be president. Those people tend to get laughed at though.

The mayor's office is also responsible, in a strange way, for the current situation. Both Gilbert and William live out in the woods. This is due to a law saying that any building with potentially hazardous uses most be situated outside the town. This of course includes any experimental labs and being that William doesn't like the idea of travelling to work, also his house.

Gilbert's house is also situated out of town.
Basically he's just a walking health hazard.

So on Boxing Day I tried to log in. I failed

I decided to wait until I had the next strip done before trying again.
Oops. It’s been a while.

Anyway, you’ll be glad to know the update schedule is back to normal and I have comics sorted out for the next couple of update days so things should go smoothly as long as there are no disasters in the near future.

Now I had this whole blog entry about local government on the island and planning regulations and blah blah blah. I’d like to post it here but I’ve lost my note pad with it written in.

I’ll find it and post in on Tuesday with the second half of this scene.

Instead here’s a link that Jess, the oh-so-wonderful webmistress of the proper Gilbert and Grim site, sent me. Ad agencies should not give LSD to their employees. They’ll do stuff like this ad for the Sega Saturn.

Those two comics were part of an attempted "Three-comics-in-one-day" day thing...
Anyway it failed as I'm having trouble finding a suitable font for a ringing telephone sound affect. If anyone has any ideas what would look good (and a link to where it can be downloaded from) I would love to know.

This strip is a guest comic and it rocks.

I've entered one of my comics over at webcomicbattle.com and it's up for voting on today.

A quick explanation of how that works:

All the comics that are entered for a particular day are paired up at random. Any visitor to the site can vote (registration not needed) and you go through all the pairs voting for your favourite in each. The winner of each pair goes through to the next day and the next and the next, until it gets paired with something much funnier or people get bored of looking at the same comic over and over again.

Anyway, it's a really god site and you should go look.

28 Wrong Rabbit

Just a single panel strip today. I'm not entirely happy with the magician but I still wanted to post it. I will be continuing the current story arc on Tuesday but I wanted to post this and although I could wait until the current arc finishes that won't be for a while and I don't like sitting on strips for too long. It's bad enough that I have two Christmas strips finished already.

Speaking of which (subtle changing of topic there) there's going to be a couple of extra strips over Christmas. I'm going to be doing normal strips up to and including Tuesday the 19th (so three more in other words) and then I'll be posting Christmas strips on Saturday the 23rd, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I'm not quite sure what's happening with Boxing Day yet as I should be doing a guest strip swap but that's not sorted out yet, so it may still be another comic from me.

After that it'll be back to the story again and back to two updates a week with one of them maybe being the guest strip if I don't post one Boxing Day and end up doing one myself that day. Confused yet?

Or just extremely busy.

Anyway I couldn't log in at all over the weekend. I just kept getting "Service Unavailable". Evil evil blogger.

No news to update anyone on but I might as well say something so I'll mention that I rented The Cat Returns (Studio Ghibli anime) from the library the other day and it is fantastic. I've watched it twice and noticed one continuity error. Either they did a good job making sure there weren't any horrible mistakes or I did a bad job of spotting them. Either way a very good movie.

I'll watch it again tonight probably (it's a seven day rental) and take it back tomorrow. I'll probably rent another one at the same time.

Considers the idea of using the blog to do reviews of movies, books and comics. Shakes head and decides that's a silly idea.

23 More fun with Vikings

The template is in the process of being ripped to tiny little pieces and put back together to look like something new and oh, so much more funky. As a result of this process it might look a little odd when you go there.
Also I know some Internet Explorer can get funny with Smack Jeeves sites, so if you do have problems and don't want to get a new browser you can keep coming here as I will still be posting the comic here as well, along with random rants and sketches and all that good stuff. ^_^

Well, one of those two times really.
Anyway here it is; the brand new strip!
Now, if any of you don’t know what I’m referencing (shame on you!) here it is.

Also, Grim won’t be making an appearance on Saturday either, so if you are lacking in your cute-animal-death intake try a little Death Piglet. Rocking in his own evil ways.

Hmm, well when I tried posting this the first time I couldn't get it to work. I've upgraded to the new version of Blogger just to see what the difference was. So far I've found out the code I was putting in before to post images doesn't work but a slightly different version does.
Anyway that's all fixed.

Again the supporting cast is growing, first Henry and now... Well, I guess you're going to have to wait to find out what his name actually is.

In other words I haven't made up my mind what it is yet. :P

I guess it must be Wednesday already.
That week seemed to go pretty quickly. I went to an arts and craft fair on Sunday. There was a woman there that teaches encaustic art, in other words painting using wax. It looked interesting so I’m having a three hour group lesson next month. After that I’ll decide whether or not it’s something I want to keep at. If it is, you might be seeing some funky new landscapes appearing in the comic.

Also I’ve done a few sketches since Saturday so I thought I’d show them here.
First up a pencil sketch of Gilbert, Grim, Thalia, William and some random guy that I decided to colour in paintshop. Also a random, sad looking manga girl, a demon Jedi because I was bored, and some teddy bears that my parents bought the other day.

You’d think with only doing two updates a week I’d be able to get these rant things sorted ahead of time, but no, it’s half past ten at night and I plan on posting this thing just after midnight so I guess I’d better get something sorted here.

Well first off there’s a couple of new links to webcomicy goodness down the bottom of the page, but I may as well repeat them here.

Scary Go Round: I want to steal John Allison’s brain for a day and some how hook it up to mine. That’s how great I think this comic is.

GingerDead and Friends: Again some more temptation to borrow a brain for a day, although this one might disturb me slightly.

Kreepy Kat: Kreepy rocks in a sick, depraved way. I think if I met him I might have to run away screaming but on screen I can’t get enough.

Also on another note, I’ve replace strip number 12 because it smelt funny. Click here to see the new and much improved version. If you haven’t seen the original version of it there’s a link as well, but be warned I take no responsibility for people’s eyes randomly bleeding all over their keyboards.

Well, it's been a while.
I've been having major creative block for the past few weeks and it's really annoying. I will have a Gilbert and Grim strip on Wednesday and following that I will be keeping a Wednesday and Saturday update schedule as that means I should be able to keep some by for when I just can't come up with something or I just don't have the time.

Anyway, in the mean time here's a little something unrelated I did today.

I will have that strip up on Wednesday even if it drives me crazy in the process.
I wouldn't have that far to go.

Well, do you remember that Sunday strip I promised a couple of days ago? It won't be happening this week unfortunately, so the Sunday bonus strip will be starting as of next Sunday.

Today's comic has been annoying me so I'm not going to post it yet.
I've been trying to make the strips a little more interesting to look at, changing angles, zooming in on the characters, zooming out, etc. I just can't seem to get today's comic to work and I'm being a perfectionist today.

Instead you get a filler drawing today. I drew this on Sunday and Coloured it on the PC yesterday. Not much else to say about it really.

12 The Weather Machine Saga Part One

I hope everyone's having a wonderful Monday so far.

As of this weekend I will be posting an extra strip on Sundays. It won't be a Gilbert and Grim strip. It will just be whatever I can think of that amuses me in some way. Also the sunday strips should, in theory at least, be hand drawn and probably hand lettered. Copy and paste not allowed. This will probably involve me headbutting the desk and developing a mild form of tourettes, but it will be worth it.

Also I introduced a new prop/character today. I'm really not sure what to class it as, but here it is anyway The Weather Machine. The island's most apocalyptic AI. Actually, it's the island's only AI, but it's still pretty apocalyptic.

This bit is where I'm really cheeky and ask any artists out there for a favour.

Well at least it's working ok.

This is tht old strip that I mentioned on Friday.
It's a little less relevant these days, but back when I drew it GM foods were in the news near enough every day. I still like it though. It's one of my favourites from the old strips so I thought I would share it.

07 Grim goes to work

It's the early hours of the morning again.
I really should go to bed at some decent sort of time, but as I'm up and the computer's running I might as well do the next update.

The only character to be featured in every strip this week is Thalia. I guess that makes this Thalia Week or something. The main reason I guess is that she's the newest. Gilbert's been around in some form or another since 1999 or 2000. Grim and William are a little younger being only about three years old, having been thought up for an earlier incarnation of Gilbert and the Grim Rabbit, which I probably showed to half a dozen people. Tuesday's strip is actually going to be one of the old strips so you can see just what they like.

All going to plan (and I'm not sure if anything ever does) the next three strips will actually live up to thier name and will be all about Gilbert and Grim, with Thalia making a reappearance next Friday.

I can't think of anything else relevant to say so I won't say anymore.

Something has gone horribly wrong with my computer.
Luckily I'm seven strips ahead of myself so I'm ok for this week and next week's strips. Fingers crossed I'll be able to sort it out because at the moment I can't actually do any strips.

Anyway this strip sees a new character, Thalia, named after the muse.

Here's a bit of what Wikipedia has to say about the muse Thalia:

"In Greek mythology, Thalia or Thaleia ("good cheer") was the muse of comedy and pastoral poetry. She was a rural goddess with the attributes of a comic mask and a shepherd's crook. Thalia is also the name of a character in William Shakespeare's play Pericles, Prince of Tyre."

So, Thalia everybody.

01 Stalked by Death

This is the first strip of my new(ish) comic.
As it says up the top it will be updated Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
So why is there a single panel strip already on display when it's only Wednesday?
Well I just wanted to make sure this worked really and as I'm starting halfway through the week I didn't think it would really matter. Does it?

Also as it says up top this is only the temporary home of the comic. I was going to wait until I had a proper site sorted for it but knowing me that will take a while and at the rate I'm writing this at the moment I'll end up with a massive backlog of stuff to upload, so for now there is this and when I get a new site sorted this will be demoted to "Sketches, rants and other comics" only.

Ok, that's enough jabbering on for the first entry.
It's time to tell some people this place exists.
